How to Hire an Attorney: Meet Face-to-Face

If you were injured and want to protect your rights, it is a good idea to find an attorney early in the process. In order to protect your interests, a good personal injury attorney must know all the details of your claim well and understand how your injuries have affected your daily life. You should trust your attorney and feel comfortable with them. Despite the wide availability and usage of remote communication nowadays, the best way to get a first impression of your potential attorney is by meeting them in person.

I have represented folks from a distance. Sometimes this kind of arrangement is necessary, such as if the injured person lives many hours away and cannot travel without exposing themselves to great risk, or maybe even a global pandemic. There are times when it makes sense to have “distance” or “remote” attorney-client relationship, but I want to emphasize: meeting face-to-face is important.

Many attorneys have turned to remote and electronic means of permitting clients to retain them. They use software such as DocuSign© and the like. At Aaron Ferguson Law, we have represented many people who had already worked with different attorneys that they had never even met before. In fact, this is often the problem: they didn’t trust their prior attorney because they had never met them in the first place. Attorney-client relationships must be built on a solid foundation of trust. The best way to develop that trust is to get to know each other as much as possible during the initial consultation – and these consultations often don’t last longer than an hour.

When you meet a person face-to-face, you have a chance to assess them based not just on what they say, but on all of their nonverbal communication as well (facial expressions, mannerisms, gestures, and comportment). Make no mistake – you must judge your attorney as a person. After all, if you don’t even like or trust your attorney, do you think a jury of your peers will?

If you or a loved one has been injured and you are searching for a real, talented, and compelling attorney that you can TRUST, please call Aaron Ferguson Law at 651-493-0426 to set up a free consultation!
